Burton Gateway

Client: St Modwen Developments

Location: Burton-Upon-Trent

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by St Modwen Developments to advise on the structural elements of the Burton Gateway which is situated in Burton-upon-Trent. With a value of £6 million, HSP co-operated with both the client and contractor and advised on the structure to have a piled foundation with suspended ground floor slabs onto piles. Burton Gateway is now a 64 acre commercial business park which includes a residential development of 660 new homes and open landscaped parkland to the west of the River Trent. Due to the enormous scale of the scheme, Burton Gateway is now considered as one of the key employment sites within East Staffordshire.

East Midlands Distribution Centre

Client: Clowes Development

Location: Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England

Contractor: G F Tomlinson Construction

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by Clowes Development to consult on the construction of the East Midland Distribution Centre.

With a value of £9 million, HSP advised on the construction of EMDC to include a twin portal frame, with a composite construction of offices. EMDC is now a multi-model distribution centre and is recognised as a strategic distribution location serving both the East Midlands and the entire UK. The distribution centre is now at over 50% occupancy, with household names such as Marks & Spencer being situated at the site.

Barberry 55, Wolverhampton

Client: The Barberry Group

Location: Wolverhampton

Value: £10 million

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Geotechnical and Transport Team were appointed by The Barberry Group, in respect to a planning application for a 55,575 sq ft industrial / warehouse unit on a 3.5 acre site in Wolverhampton.

The development will be a highly specified Grade A building with 10 metre-eaves, 2,965 sq ft of internal offices, 45 car parking spaces and 50-metre yard depths, with dock and level access loading provision. 

Construction is to begin in the second quarter of 2019, with anticipated completion of the development in 2020. 

Distribution Unit – Bedfordshire

Client: Wixams

Location: Bedfordshire

Value: £40 million

Project overview

HSP Consulting Engineers Ltd are the appointed Geotechnical, Environmental, Civil and Structural Engineers on a 1,000,000 sqft Distribution Unit situated in Bedfordshire. With a value of £40 million, the distribution unit is expected to be completed in August 2019. 

In terms of structural works, HSP Consulting Engineers are undertaking a 4 month cut and fill exercise, to support the spread foundations and heavily loaded floor slap for a 20 meter highbay warehouse with refrigeration and freezing facilities. 

Optimum Industrial Park, Swadlincote

Client: PMW Property Developments

Location: Swadlincote, Derbyshire

Value: £2.5 Million

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Traffic Department were appointed by PMW Property Developments, in respect to the planning application for 10 industrial units (B1c/ B2 & B8 use) in Swadlincote, Yorkshire. 

With a value of £2.5 million, HSP were appointed to prepare a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan for the planning application. The Transport Assessment examined the accessibility, trip generation and traffic impact of the site on the local road network. 

The workplace Travel Plan that accompanied the planning application outlined a series of objectives, targets and measures for the development to achieve, in order to maximise sustainable modes of travel amongst site users. 

Eddie Stobbart – Elmet, Yorkshire

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Structural Team were commissioned to provide engineering advice on the construction of a 750,000 sq ft warehouse, with a value of £10 million in Elmet, Yorkshire. 

Given the extremely short time scale present (following appointment), HSP’s sound engineering advice ensured that the construction of the warehouse was completed in five months, whilst simultaneously providing value engineering which saved the client a considerable sum of money. 

Leicester Bakery

Client: G F Tomlinson

Location: Leicester

Value:  £10 million

Project overview

HSP Consulting were appointed by G F Tomlinson as the principal engineers for the construction of several industrial units situated in Leicester that is to be occupied by Leicester Bakery once completed. HSP’s input was namely but not exclusive to the following works:

  • The design and details of the foundations and ground floor slabs together with recommendations on the wind loading for the three buildings.
  • The design of lift pits and lift shafts and any isolated steels for wall supports or lift beams etc and all associated lintels on the scheme.
  • The design and details of the storm and foul water drainage systems including any attenuation requirements.
  • The design for the structural steel frame and associated structural steelwork details.

Waste Treatment Plant, Ilkeston

Client: Johnsons Aggregates

Location: Ilkeston

Contractor: Johnsons Aggregates

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by Johnsons Aggregates to consult on the expansions of a Large Waste Recycling Unit in Ilkeston.

With a value of £10 million, HSP advised for the existing portal frame to be raised by 4 meters which would allow the plant and conveyors to accommodate the building and, in addition, it was advised for the external boundary to have a 5-metre retaining wall in order to support the waste material.

Parceline – Birmingham

Client: Parcelline Plc

Contractor: Loach Construction

Architect: Red 4

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s structural team were appointed by Parcelline Plc to provide engineering advice in respect to the construction of a three storey steel frame distribution warehouse with associated offices in Birmingham. The scheme was worth in the region of £15 million.

Today, the distribution centre is effectively the regional hub of Parcelline, operating as a multi-million pound facility. 

CAT Manufacturing Plant

Client: St Modwens

Contractor: Finnings UK

Architect: Hulme Upright

Project overview

With a value of £14 million, HSP Consulting were commissioned by St Modwen Developments on the construction of a large steel frame industrial unit, which has been designed to be a high-tech manufacturing and office facility. 

Today, the industrial unit is operated by the company Caterpillar Inc, which is known multinationally as a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, in addition to providing financial services. 


Client: Barberry Developments

Location: Burton-Upon-Trent

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by Barberry Developments to provide ‘creative value engineering’ to the structure of an Industrial Unit situated in Burton-upon-Trent. By performing a comprehensive structural survey of the site, HSP removed the need for the contractor to proceed with vibroflotation which ultimately saved the client in excess of £200,000.
