Capella Stem Cell Research Laboratory Building

Client: Kier Construction
Location: Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge
Project overview
To aid the design of the new Capella Stem Cell Research Laboratory Building, HSP Consulting were contracted to carry out an extensive ground investigation, including wire line rotary boreholes, augered rotary boreholes, window sampling and trial pitting to investigate foundations of adjacent buildings. HSP carried out an assessment of groundwater in relation to basement design and recommended basement slab thickness for this seven-storey development, in addition to our standard Phase I and Phase II investigations.
HSP also carried out utilities and topographical surveys and slit trenching to locate gas pipes on the site.
Otterbourne Care Home

Client: Brendoncare Ltd
Location: Winchester
Contractor: Stepnell Construction
Project overview
HSP were commissioned by Brendoncare Ltd to advise on the construction of Otterbourne Hill which is a care home designed to support individuals and couples with nursing and dementia care needs, situated in the Hampshire village of Otterbourne. With a value of £15 million, HSP advised for the structure to utilise composite, precast and beam and pot flooring, with mass concrete foundations. Furthermore, through extensive communication with both the client and contractor, HSP encouraged the structure of Otterbourne Hill to have suspended floors with 2/3 storey structures.
Otterbourne Hill was completed in September 2018.
Albany Meadows, Balsall Common


Client: Amber Infrastructure Ltd

Project overview
HSP were commissioned by Amber Infrastructure Ltd to advise on the construction of Albany Meadows; a new retirement development consisting of 39 contemporary homes featuring a mix of two-bedroom bungalows, three-bed houses and two-bed apartments, all with access to landscapes green spaces, car parking and a wide variety of amenities and services.
The development was initially planned to be designed with piled foundations; however was considered to be too expensive and therefore not viable to construct. HSP assessed the foundation conditions and undertook additional trial hole investigations, proceeding to confirm to the client that 60% of the site could be stabilised utilising vibroflotation. This provided a significant cost saving, allowing for the scheme to proceed according to the timeline.
Albany Meadows was completed in October 2018 and is now in operation.
Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham

Project overview
HSP Consulting were commissioned to undertake a variety of general works for the Queens Medical Centre over a total period of eight years.
Today, the Queens Medical Centre site contains the University of Nottingham Medical and Nursing schools, Mental Health Wards and a privately run Nottingham Treatment Centre. The site also consists of an accident and emergency unit, of which is the primary destination for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance for seriously injured patients.
Urology Centre, Nottingham City Hospital

Project overview
HSP Consulting were commissioned by Nottingham City Hospital (NHS Trust) to design the structure of the Urology Centre, within the grounds of Nottingham City Hospital.
With an estimated value of £5 million, the site was increasingly challenging given that the basement needed to be tanked on one side. As a solution, HSP advised for the building to constructed onto padded foundations, straight onto the underlying sandstone.
The architect for the scheme was: The Design Buro, and the contractor: Herbert Baggaley Construction.
Lindum Medical Village


Client: Eastgate Construction (Lincoln) Ltd
Location: Lincoln
Project overview
HSP Consulting’s Traffic and Transport Department were appointed by Eastgate Construction (Lincoln) Ltd to prepare a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan to support a planning application for a new privately run medical / healthcare facility with overnight beds.
Our Transport department were involved in an extensive amount of works for the Lindum Medical Village, including preparing the access design for both pedestrians and vehicles, trip generation and conducting a junction impact assessment of the development traffic on the local road network.
The Travel Plan that accompanied the planning application is a framework to increase sustainable activity at the site, whilst simultaneously reducing single occupancy vehicle use. The Travel Plan incorporates both aims, objectives, targets and travel measures to facilitate this.
Nursing Education Centre, Kings Mill Hospital

Project overview
HSP Consulting were commissioned by the NHS to provide structural advice on the Nursing Education Centre, at the Kings Mill Hospital site in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
Following appointment, and with a value of £5.5 million, HSP engineered and supervised to construction of a steel frame lecture theatre and the refurbishment of the existing accommodation.
