Grange Technology College, Bradford

Client: Costain-Ferrovial

HSP Consulting’s Structural Team  were commissioned by Costain Ferrovial on the design and construction of the Grange Technology College in Bradford.

With a value of £42 million, today, the Grange Technology College is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status and hosts a capacity of 1848 pupils with 300 staff.

HSP were involved in the full design and detailing of the school from concept to final construction, with the design of the school being integral to showcase the stature of the school within the local community.

Hampton Gardens Secondary School

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by Peterborough City Council to advise on a new build secondary school for 1500 students in Peterborough. With a value of £27 million, HSP were involved in the full design and detailing from concept to final construction. Opened in September 2017, Hampton Gardens Secondary School is a large two and three storey steel framed school with comprehensive facilities including a 3G All-Weather sports pitch, an Amphitheatre and a Learning Resource Centre.

In addition HSP prepared a Transport Statement and Travel Plan during its proposal stages. The school opened in phases, in line with the growth in housing provision surrounding the site. The study needed to consider the phasing of pupils, traffic and parking demand, access, road safety and measures to encourage staff and pupils to travel by non-car modes to the School.

Nottingham University

Client: Nottingham University

Location: Nottingham 

Value: £15 million

Project overview

HSP Consulting were commissioned to undertake a number of structural works, with a value of £15 million ,regarding the construction of a new teaching block which is to consist of a performing arts studio, a large lecture theatre and a five storey inner atrium.

The structure as a whole, comprises of a five storey steel frame and precast floors, and was completed in July 2018.

County STEM Academy, Bury St-Edmunds

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Traffic & Transport Team were appointed by Kier Construction to prepare a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan For the proposed County STEM academy in Bury St-Edmunds. The proposed academy is to be sited adjacent to the existing Westley Middle School,  located on a section of existing playing field to the rear of the school.

The County STEM Academy will offer a high quality curriculum for 13 – 18 year olds, and will be part of the Bury St Edmunds All-Through Trust.

Construction is currently underway on-site, with the school expected to be completed in September 2019.

Telford Co-operative Academy

Client: Telford Co-operative Academy

Location: Telford

Value: £20  million

Project overview

HSP were commissioned by Shepherd Construction to advise on the construction of a proposed school in Telford Valued at £27 million. The project involved the construction of a new building to provide accommodation for the Telford Co-Operative Academy.

The existing building was constructed on local authority owned land, incorporating grassed pitches, a running track, a leisure centre, and a tennis centre.

HSP advised on the new building to comprise of a hot rolled steel frame, supporting cast in-situ concrete composite floor slabs and cold rolled purlins which were used to support the built up roof system. HSP also advised for the Floor slabs to be connected to beams by a series of thru-deck welded studs, with the beams being designed compositely with the slab.

With HSP’s input, the Telford Co-operative Academy was completed on time and to budget.

Benson C of E Primary School, Oxfordshire

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Traffic and Transport Department were appointed to prepare a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan in respect to the proposal of an additional teaching block at Benson C of E School in Oxfordshire. The proposals of an additional teaching block expand the pupil capacity of the primary school from 210 pupils to 315 pupils, with a marginal increase in staff numbers.

The Transport Assessment reviewed the accessibility of the site, the trip generation associated with the additional pupil numbers and the traffic impact on the surrounding road network and junctions. The Transport Assessment subsequently informed the Local Highway Authority, Oxfordshire City Council Highways on the impact of the development on the local transport infrastructure.

The accompanying Travel Plan which was submitted with the planning application, proposed a series of measures objectives and targets for both pupils and staff to achieve in an attempt to encourage the uptake in sustainable and active modes of travel at the school.

Proposed Free School, Coombe Road

Location: Croydon

Value: £25 Million

Project overview

HSP carried out a ground investigation, ecology surveys and unexploded ordnance surveys at the proposed site of a large secondary free school with associated playground, cycle track, car parking and playing fields.

The ground investigation addressed the complex geology at the site, with three different types of bedrock recorded at the site, through a variety of methods including cable percussive drilling, window sampling and trial pitting. The Phase II report was issued in interim form within fifteen days of completion on site to meet client schedules. The brief insisted that the playing fields were left exactly as they were found, which was achieved.

To address ecological issues at the site, HSP carried out an arboricultural survey and bat surveys. The site is located next to Coombe Wood, a rare expanse of woodland inside the M25 and an important habitat.

Mill Hill School, Ripley

Project overview

HSP were commissioned to advise on the construction of a two storey classroom block at the Ripley Academy (formerly Mill Hill School) in Ripley, Derbyshire.

Due to the poor ground conditions present, HSP advised for the foundations to be piled with suspended ground floors, and for the structure to consist of a simple braced steel frame with SIPPS panels externally. The creative value engineering provided by HSP assisted to reduce the sum of costs for the client.

Beckfoot School – Bradford

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s Geotechnical and Structural team  were commissioned by Integrated Bradford on the design of Beckfoot School, Bradford.

With a value of £40 million, Beckfoot School and its associated buildings have been designed as two storey with steel frames.

Today, Beckfoot School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, and hosts a capacity of approximately 1,700 pupils.

Since opening, Beckfoot School has achieved a host of awards including that of the ‘Investors in People’ and ‘School Achievement Award’ accreditations.

Law & Social Sciences Building, Nottingham University

Project overview

HSP Consulting’s structural team were commissioned by Nottingham University, on the design and construction of the purposed built Law & Social Sciences building that is to be sited within the campus.

With a value of £3 million, the Law & Social Sciences building has been designed as a three storey steel framed structure, and in particular the masonry and roof details were designed to blend in with the surrounding structures and neighbouring developments.
