Bradford BSF – Phase II, (£170 million)
HSP Consulting were employed by EDUCO (Costain-Ferrovial) to provide and co-ordinate all survey information to assist in the design process from outline feasibility stage right through to detailed design. The Phase II schools consist of 3No. Primary and 4No. Secondary schools/ campuses.
The survey work commenced with providing initial structural appraisals of a number of the schools involved in this group. Alongside of this a full Phase I Ground Investigation (i.e. non-intrusive) report was conducted including Enviro-check reports and historical searches.
This was inevitably followed by conducting full Phase II Ground Investigation reports on each of the seven schools to determine foundation type, extent (if any) of ground contamination, CBR’s for external works designs, ground gas precaution levels etc. The information contained within the Phase I reports was used to economically design the requirements of the intrusive works and determine which investigation methods were required to which sites. Methods employed ranged from basic mechanically excavated trial holes to light cable percussion boreholes and rotary boreholes. The extent of works varied on school ranging from trial holes and a small number of boreholes up to forming a herringbone grid of boreholes to determine the extents of a deep contamination plume on one school. Test piles were also arranged for one site. Ground gas monitoring points were also established to allow subsequent return visits to determine gas flow rates and composition.
Alongside the Phase II investigation works HSP co-ordinated the remaining survey requirements as laid down by EDUCO/ the LEP/ Planning Authority. These included Ecology Surveys, full Topographic Surveys, Below Ground Services Surveys, CCTV Surveys of existing below ground drainage and further Structural Surveys.
Once the survey work was completed Traffic Assessments and Flood Risk Assessments were carried out by HSP for each of the seven schools to assist in the design and Planning process.
Following on from this full Civil/ Structural design was undertaken for the four secondary schools from initial concept right through to construction stage.
